College of Eastern Utah’s women’s basketball brought home two defeats from Dixie State College last weekend. After suffering a 48-72 blowout Friday, the Lady Eagles made a better showing Saturday losing to the Lady Rebels 60-72.
“Again poor shooting hurt us. Friday night we shot only 25 percent. The first half on Saturday was the same, 21 percent. But in the second half, we played pretty well, shooting 41 percent, and made a game of it,” said Dave Paur, head coach for the Lady Eagles.
On Friday, Dixie shot 49 percent from the field. Although the Eagles made more field goal attempts, the win was out of reach as their shooting average was less than half of their opponents’ average.
With CEU making 19 personal fouls and Dixie making just 12, Dixie had 30 shots from the line, and made 67 percent. CEU shot 28 percent of 18 attempts from the line.
CEU’s high scorer was Janeen Nelson with 10 points and three rebounds. Veva Whitear made eight points, four assists and four steals. Jana Glover made seven points, two rebounds and three steals. Krislyn Wallace made seven points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Four Dixie players reached double digits in scoring: Talita Aguiar with 13 points, Charmaine Piula with 12, Jenna Sawyer with 12, and Lauren Olsen with 11.
Dixie led in rebounding with 57 total rebounds compared with CEU’s 47. The Lady Eagles made 15 steals while the Lady Rebels had 12; both teams made four blocks. Dixie also had 19 assists, compared with six by Eastern Utah.
Saturday’s first half was more of the same. Dixie State shot 61 percent from the field, making 20 of 33 field goals, and two of six foul shots. CEU made just five of 25 field goals and one of six from the line.
However, Eastern Utah kept Dixie to just 48 percent from the field, making 11 of 23. The Lady Eagles upped their shooting to 41 percent from the field, making 16 of 19 attempts, and 73 percent from the line, making eight of 11.
Whitear led her team in both defense and offense, scoring 25 points, making seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Nelson was close behind making 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Eastern Utah also went to the line more on Saturday, making nine of 17 attempts while Dixie made eight of 13 attempts.
Saturday’s team totals ended up more even, with CEU making 39 rebounds and Dixie making 41. CEU made 18 fouls; Dixie made 17. CEU made five blocks, Dixie, six. CEU had 19 steals, Dixie 14.
The Lady Eagles remain seventh in the conference, with their only conference wins against eighth-ranked Colorado Northwestern Community College.
CEU will face sixth-ranked Snow College at home this weekend. Snow has five wins this season, with three against CNCC, one against Salt Lake Community College, and a 48-70 win against CEU in Ephraim last December.
