After what seemed like a careful start, it soon became clear to see; the Carbon Lady Dinos owned the North Sanpete Lady Hawks in Tuesday night’s volleyball game at Carbon High.
Not to say the Lady Hawks didn’t make it difficult. Carbon High had to earn every point of the night, with long rallies being the theme of the matchup.
Carbon got control of the games early, though, and was able to cruise on to three straight wins. Final scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17.
Last year, Carbon and North Sanpete had several late season meetings which came out in favor of the Lady Hawks.
The two teams met in the championship match of the state tournament where North Sanpete was able to steal the title from a tough Carbon club.
North Sanpete also caused havoc for many of the same players on the basketball court, ousting Carbon from a chance at the title game in the semi-final round at the state tournament.
However, Tuesday night’s performance showed that Carbon High is not afraid of anyone.
According to coach Bruce Bean, the girls even exceeded his own expectations with their play.
“I thought we played pretty darn good [on Tuesday],” he stated. “It kinda sent a message.”
Bean attributed much of Carbon’s strength to the exceptional team play of his starters, the 42 kills the team accumulated during the night and flawless blocking at the net.
“I thought our blocking was exceptional,” he indicated.
Bean said he expects North Sanpete to be the toughest team Carbon will see this season from Region 8.
However, he pointed out that the team cannot afford to overlook Lehi, which the Lady Dinos will play tonight on the road.
“We’re going to have to show up [tonight] with our best game,” pointed out Bean.
Carbon is currently leading the Region 8 standings at 3-0 and is the only region team without a loss.
The Lady Dinos have also swept every region and non-region team they have faced this season.
Morgan High remains the number one ranked 3A volleyball team in the state, with Carbon High closely behind. A match between the two teams can most likely be expected at this year’s state tournament in October.
