If preseason performance is any indication of what lies ahead, Carbon High volleyball fans can start camping out now for good seats at the 3A championships in October.
Lady Dino varsity and junior varsity volleyball took it to the bulk of southern Utah schools at a Dixie tournament on Aug. 20 and 21.
While the junior varsity squad cruised to gold-bracket victory, losing only a single game out of several matches, the varsity players set an even higher standard for their underclassman proteges. Varsity won the gold bracket without a loss.
Last weekend, Carbon High varsity joined 48 teams from around the west for an annual preseason tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. The team came away with a third place finish in the competitive tournament, its best finish so far.
“We seem to have a pretty good chemistry with some of the girls,” coach Bruce Bean commented.
Amongst the team’s highlights was a win over last year’s 4A state champion team Lone Peak.
Carbon narrowly missed the championship game after a loss to Las Vegas school Silverado.
According to Bean, Carbon won the first match 25-20 and was up 24-21 in the second. A missed serve gave Silverado control and the team upset the Dinos 28-26. The third game score was 17-15.
The team travels to Uintah today and hosts Wasatch on Sept. 1.
