John Jorgensen


CASTLE DALE – John Lester Jorgensen of Castle Dale, passed away Aug. 29, 2004 at Castleview Hospital in Price, surrounded by his family.
He was born April 16, 1926 to James Lester Jorgensen and Adela Caroline Seely in Mt. Pleasant. In 1950 he met Yvonne Thomas of Salt Lake City and they were later married June 8, 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He was the oldest of six children and was raised on the Jorgensen Ranch southeast of Castle Dale. His childhood years were spent on the ranch and on the mountain sheep herding with his family. He graduated from South Emery High in May 1944 and enlisted in the Navy serving as a Gunner’s Mate First Class until 1946. In the summer of 1946 he was called to the Copenhagen, Denmark Mission to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He returned in January 1949 and enrolled at the University of Utah majoring in history. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1953, receiving a Master’s degree in education administration in 1955 and was employed by the Carbon and Emery School Districts for 33 years. He was principal of Cottonwood Elementary from 1973 to 1975 and principal of Castle Dale Elementary from 1976 until his retirement in 1987. He served as mayor of Castle Dale from 1958 to 1962 and on the city council from 1962 to 1970. He served as bishop of the Castle Dale LDS Ward from 1968 to 1976 and subsequently served on the stake high council for 18 years. In 1989 he was called to work in the Manti LDS Temple and in 1995 he was called with his wife, to serve in the New Jersey, Cherry Hill LDS Mission, returning in 1996. His loves and interests were temple work, family history, gardening, riding to the farm, spending time with his brothers and grandchildren. He also had a great love for his country.
He is survived by siblings, Allen Gale, Theron Don, Shirley Lena Christensen of Flowell; and Justus Ray; children, Elizabether Fuller (Dennis) of Castle Dale; Anne Adele Coleman (Maurice) of Batavia, Ill.; Shelley Baum (Alan) of Ashton, Idaho; Jennifer Fauver (James) of Orangeville; John T. (Rebecca), Sara, and Joshua (Stacy), all of Salt Lake City. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandsons. He is preceded in death by parents; brother, Joseph Carlton; wife; grandson, Benjamin John Fuller.
There will be a viewing Wednesday, Sept. 1, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Castle Dale LDS Stake Center. Funeral services will also be held at the stake center at noon Thursday, Sept, 2, with a viewing beginning at 11 a.m.


Walter Strey


WELLINGTON – Walter Joseph Strey, a resident of Wellington, for the last 30 years, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.
Walter was born on the family homestead March 12, 1918 near what was Gibson, Mont. His parents, Paul Martin Strey and Martha Michalak Strey immigrated to the United States from West Prussia and Poland.
In his early years, Walter worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington and Montana and was a cattle rancher in Montana before serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Later he became a master carpenter helping to build the Air Force Academy, NORAD Command Center and buildings at the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado.
Walter was a loving father and grandfather. Though he never knew most of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he loved them all and wondered about them often.
Walter is survived by son, Martin Strey; grandsons, Kevin Strey, Mark (Tanya) Strey, Stephen Strey, Jason Strey and Patrick Strey and granddaughters Dawn (Randy) Dawsey, Jody (Robin) Panattoni, Michelle Strey, Desiree Strey, Courtney Strey and Rachel (Alphonso) Crispi, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Walter is preceded in death by mother and father; daughter, Jenna Vee Strey; sons, David Strey and Darrell Strey; as well as brothers, Lawrence Strey and Stanley Strey; and sisters, Frances Strey and Sofia McMillen.


Helen Matsuda


HELPER – Helen Tsuyako Amano Matsuda, age 79, passed away Aug. 29, 2004 in Price.
Born Feb. 27, 1925 in Helper, to Katsusaku and Masa Amano. She married Harold Matsuda on April 22, 1948 in Helper; he died Jan. 31, 2003.
Lifelong resident of Carbon County, where she owned and operated Quality Cleaners in Price with her husband, Harold. She was well known for her excellence in sewing and alterations, customer service, and diligence to detail. Helen loved her children, grandchildren, associations with friends (new and old), traveling, gardening, and taking pictures. Her generosity, humility of self, and thoughtfulness of others will be long remembered.
Survived by sons, David Matsuda, Helper; Bryon (Laurel) Matsuda, Tucson, Ariz.; grandson, Luke Matsuda, Espanola, N.M.; granddaughters, Rebecca and Carli Matsuda, Longmont, Colo. Preceded in death by husband, Harold.
Funeral service Thursday, Sept. 2, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main, Price. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening, 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.


Caecilia Hansen


HELPER – Caecilia Hansen, age 94, died Aug. 27, 2004 in Price.
Born May 21, 1910 in Wimbleton, England to Hubert Muskett and Gurtrude Linnell King. Married Marion Hansen Nov. 26, 1955 in Helper.
Caecilia was a longtime resident of Carbon County and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family.
Survived by husband; children, Mike (Marsha) Hansen, West Valley; April (Howard) Roberts, Tooele; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, Aug. 31, 10 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil service Monday evening, 7 p.m., at the church in Helper. Family will be at the church one hour prior to services. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to St. Anthony Catholic Church, Helper.


Hildegard Winter


PRICE – Hildegard Kaehl Winter, age 90, passed away Aug. 27, 2004 in Price.
She was born Sept. 28, 1913 in Stettin, Pommerania, Germany to Ernst August and Karolina Fredericke Beckman Boelter. She married Wilhelm Kaehl Jan. 21, 1941. He lost his life during the fighting near what is now St. Petersburg, Oct. 3, 1943, leaving Hildegard to care for herself and their infant son. After the war, the two of them emigrated to the United States and made their home in the Salt Lake area. She then married Ernst J. Winter who also preceded her in death.
She was a second generation member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the faith that saw her through many hardships and heartaches that accompanied the Saints of her beloved Germany during World War II.
Hildegard supported herself and her son working hard with her hands, doing primarily domestic work. Though most of her days were filled with toil, she never pursued much in the way of worldly possessions, but laid up for herself treasures in Heaven where now her hands can, at long last, rest.
She is survived by son, Juergen and wife, Ramona Kaehl of Price; two granddaughters and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by parents, all her brothers and sisters, and two husbands.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m. in the Douglas LDS Chapel, located at 721 S. 1200 East in Salt Lake City. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial, Cliffview Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.


Fred Dunham


GREEN RIVER – Fred Dunham died peacefully at home in Green River, August 26, 2004.
Born to Col. Fred A. and Florence Dunham in Rifle, Colo. July 30, 1928.
Born to a ranching and military family, Gene acquired a passion for both. He served in World War II and the Korean War, after which he spent his lifetime as a farmer and rancher. His love for ranching and cattle brought him to Green River in the 50’s where he purchased the Ruby Ranch. He spent the next 39 years developing and operating the ranch where his six children (and many extras) were raised. During the uranium boom, he and his family operated S&M Sales Company, which supplied the uranium industry throughout the Colorado Plateau. Later he expanded into the melon business where he enjoyed meeting and visiting with many people. Gene’s life was full of adventure. His early antics included driving his military jeep from Alaska to Panama, orchestrating the first motor boat races down the Green River, and skiing at Aspen on wooden skis, reaching speeds of nearly 80 miles per hour.
He served in numerous leadership positions, including commander of the American Legion, past Master of Orient Lodge, over 30 years on the Green River Soil Conservation District Board, twice as president of the Southeastern Utah Cattlegrowers Assoc., vice president of the Utah Cattlemen’s Assoc., and president of the Melon Buster Square Dancers.
He is survived by wife, Nancy; children, Kirk (Paula) Dunham, Kresha (Blair) Eastman, Chris Dunham, Gayna (Daniel) Salinas, Kerry (Curtis) Rozman, Kelly (Thomas) Quinn; eight grandchildren; sister, Patricia Voneiff of Dallas Texas; brother, and George (Lynn) Dunham of Grand Junction, Colo. He will be missed by all.
Memorial Service August 31, 1 p.m., at Green River City park

Robert Chubbuck


SPRING GLEN – Robert Roy Chubbuck, age 85, died Aug. 26, 2004 at his home from natural causes.
Born Jan. 7, 1919 in Buena Vista, Colo. to George and Ethel Freemond Chubbuck. Married Marie Losik May 18, 1938 in Price. She died July 24, 2000.
Robert spent all of his life in Carbon County working in various coal mines. He was an Army veteran of World War II receiving the purple heart. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and U.M.W.A. He lived in Spring Glen for over 50 years surrounded by wonderful friends and neighbors.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tony and Shirley Kabonic, Mike and Michele Tatton, Mary Kilgore and family, and John and Kitty Harrington. A very special thank you to his granddaughter and care giver, Cindy Lindsey.
Survived by children, Roberta (Sam) Jones, Phyllis (Ron) Lindsey, both of Price; Steve (Bilene) Chubbuck, West Valley; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Georgene Goodall, Sacramento, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Adeline Fowler, Viola Skriner and Wanda Chubbuck. Preceded in death by wife, parents; two sisters and one brother.
Graveside service Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Helper. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to service.


Mary Day


PRICE – Our much loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, “Aunt Mary” and friend left our loving arms Aug. 29,2004 for a joyous reunion with her beloved husband, Golden (1995) and son, Kenneth (1950). “Oh, my loves how I have missed you!”
Mary was born November 13, 1913 to Joe Miller and Anna Simmonich in Leadville, Colo.
Survived by daughter, Golda Leonard; husband (Robert; granddaughters, Lori Clawson (Chris), Lana Emery (Doug); six wonderful great-grandsons: James & Robert Clawson, Barclay (Lindsay) Brantley, Braxton & Brock Emery; sister, Anna Stonebraker; and brother, Joe D. Miller. Preceded in death. Luke Millich, my stepfather was the only “Dad” I ever knew.

Earl Davis Sr.


PRICE – Earl R. Davis Sr., age 85, passed away Aug. 29, 2004 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
Born July 29, 1919 in Scofield, to John Davis Sr. and Jane Price. He married the love of his life and junior high sweetheart, Ailie M. Kuru on Dec. 6, 1941 in Salt Lake City; she died March 6, 1985.
Lifelong resident of Carbon County where he was a retired member of the U.M.W.A. with 44 years of dedicated service with Standardville, Spring Canyon, Royal and Kaiser Coal Mines. He was an honorary life member of Price Elks Lodge 1550.
Earl was a very nice and caring person who always had a warm smile and a kind word. He was an avid fisherman and he loved the outdoors.
Survived by daughter, Tamara (Lee) Johnson; son, Earl Rick (Charlotte) Davis; both of Price; sister, Donna White, Price; brothers, Stan (Jewell) Davis, Price; Bob (Pat) Davis, Sun River, Ore.; sister-in-law, Loma Davis, Price; brother-in-law, Karlo Kuru, Helper; four grandchildren, Kean (Amy) Johnson, Bren Johnson, Jason (Lisa) Davis; Robert (Jaime) Davis; three great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Neatha Wilson


STORES/KAYSVILLE – Neatha Leona Mower Wilson passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Davis Hospital.
Neatha was born June 14, 1920 in Stores, Spring Canyon, to Clarence and Leona Kristina Clark Mower. She married Alvin Reay Greener, the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 10, 1960. He passed away August 28, 1984. She married Stanley R. Elliott, he passed away February 12, 1996. She married Quintes L. Wilson December 9, 1998.
Neatha was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in numerous callings. She served a mission to Ohio with her husband Stan. She also worked in the St. George LDS Temple for 12 years. She loved children and was Jr. Sunday School coordinator for 20 years.
She was an accomplished seamstress and had worked for J.C. Penney’s as a bookkeeper. She also worked at the Marina Store at Strawberry Reservoir where she loved to fish.
She is survived by husband, Quintes; son, Dennis L. (Charlotte) Greener, Bellevue, Wash.; daughters, Lynda (Bart) Ryan, Delta; Jeannine (Ladd) Gordon, West Valley City; Cindy (Terry Hamilton ) Davies, Price; stepsons, Dennis (Vickie) Wilson; James A.
