Donna Vallejos


SPRING GLEN – Donna Marie Tidwell Vallejos, age 42, passed away Dec. 30, 2003 at Castleview Hospital.
She was born Aug. 29, 1961 in Price to Bill J. Tidwell Sr. and Rosemarie Perla. Married Antonio Miguel Vallejos May 7, 1977 in Spring Glen. She loved him with all her heart to the very end, she always said he was her heart, her everything.
Donna was a very beautiful, loving, giving and talented person. She was a great cook and craftsman. She loved life, her children and her grandchildren with all her heart.
Member of the Catholic Church, where she was the chairman of St. Anthony’s Mexican dinner for 2003.
Donna was a Brownie Scout, Campfire Girl and she loved all aspects of Girl Scouting. She later taught Brownies, Girl Scouts, and was a Cub Scout leader and the boys loved her, as she did them. She collected miniatures (especially Cracker Jack prizes given to her by her mom). Donna loved Murder She Wrote and Neil Diamond.
Survived by two sons and one daughter, Anthony James (Donna) Vallejos, Spring Glen; Tanya Marie Vallejos, Jason Daniel Vallejos, both of Craig, Colo.; parents, Bill and Rose Tidwell, Spring Glen; brothers, Bill J. (Cherrie) Tidwell, Craig, Colo.; Jim J. (Sharon) Tidwell, Magna; Terry L (Molly) Tidwell, Wellington; and five grandchildren, McKayla, Anthony Jayden, Dylan, Jesse and Jeremy. Also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceded in death by grandparents, John and Margaret Perla, James and Madge Tidwell; uncle, Lee Thornton; cousin, Matthew Thornton; and aunt, Joan Tidwell.
Funeral Mass was Jan. 3, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.


Anton Hribar Sr.


HELPER – Anton “Tony” Hribar Sr., age 89, died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Wasatch Valley Rahab, Salt Lake City.
Born Oct. 26, 1914 in Glencoe, Ohio to Toni and Lucy Gregorcic Hribar. Married Mary Krompel June 12, 1941 in Price, later divorced. Married his soul mate, Mary Radakovich March 29, 1950 in Price. Mary died May 19, 1979.
Tony worked in the coal mines starting at age 14 to help support his family. He worked at Latuda, Spring Canyon, Raines, Mutual and retired from Castle Gate in 1972. He purchased a truck and hauled coal to many homes in the Helper area. Worked as a janitor at Carbon High School for 10 years.
Member of the Slovenian Lodge for over 80 years. Charter member of UMWA District 22 Local 1681. Tony and Mary were active in all baseball especially Little League Baseball (WBBA). Tony was a coach and league president for many years. He was also an umpire for many years with softball and the American Legion baseball. Tony enjoyed many trips to Wendover with his family and friends. His grandchildren were very dear to his heart.
Tony will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survived by children, Mary (Arlo) Smith, Auburn, Wash; Garry Hribar, Cedar City; Tony Jr. Hribar, West Valley; Tommy Hribar, Helper; sister, Nettie (Harold) McLaughlin, Pittsburgh, Pa.; five grandchildren, Owen (Louise) Smith; Arlene (Robert) Yeagley, Tabitha, Sara and Bonnie Hribar; six great-grandchildren, Tyler,. Trista Smith, Chad, Jeremy, Michael, Tysley Yeagley; sisters-in-law, Millie Fox, Mary Metelko; and brother-in-law, Bob Radakovich; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Mary; son, Larry; sisters, Mary, Betty, Lucy, Margaret, Vera Metelko; brothers, Johnnie, Rudy and Ernest Metelko.
Funeral service Saturday, Jan. 3, 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Friday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations made to Helper WBBA baseball in care of Walter Borla, Helper, UT.

Bill Nielsen


SPRING GLEN – William “Uncle Bill” Poppleton Nielsen, age 90, passed away Jan. 3, 2004 in Price.
He was born Jan. 26, 1913 in Ely, Nev., to Wilford Lewis and Louisa Perkes Poppleton Nielsen. Married Annie Mismash Sept. 13, 1932 in Spring Canyon.
Longtime resident of Carbon County where he was a retired member of the UMWA Local 8622 with 30 years of dedicated service. In 1950 Bill began working at Kilfoyle’s in Price where he worked for 26 years. He was an active member of the Helper Lions Club for 10 years and an honorary life member of Price Elks Lodge 1550. Bill enjoyed traveling, woodworking and working in his yard. He will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by loving wife of 71 years, Annie Nielsen, Price; daughter, Frances Ann (LaMar) Hussey, Price; sons, William Poppleton (Carol) Nielsen, Tempe, Ariz.; Lee Roy Nielsen, Bountiful; sister, Sophia Critchlow, Price; Harold “Pudge” Nielsen, Helper; many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and those who fondly referred to him as “Uncle Bill”. Preceded in death by parents; three brothers, Wilford Lewis Jr., Vernon, Edward Nielsen; four sisters, Katie Mildred Banasky, Thelma Nielsen, Rhoda Mae Udovich, and Alberta Nielsen.
Funeral service Friday, Jan. 9, noon, Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to service. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper


Bud Hunten


HELPER – Arthur “Bud” Lyndon Hunten, age 92, passed away Dec. 31, 2003 at his home.
Born May 4, 1911 in Price to Arthur Henry and Eunice Snow Hunten. Married Esther Sassetti Caruso Oct. 6, 1934 in Price; marriage later solemnized in the Mount Timpanogas LDS Temple. Esther passed away Nov. 26, 1986.
Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lifelong resident of Carbon County, where he was one of the oldest active members of UMWA Local 1681.
He loved working with wood, reading and gardening. Bud was a sports enthusiast, he loved the New York Yankees and playing baseball in the coal camps. “Uncle Bud” loved little children and he will be dearly missed by all.
Survived by three sisters, Hannah Ruth Rose, Patricia Jean Hoye, both of Vallejo, Calif.; Nora Marie (Blaine) M. Christensen, Helper; nieces and nephews, Richard Hanks, Mesa, Ariz.; Norma King, Sonoma, Calif.; Faye Morris, Vallejo, Calif.; Jim (Denna) Rose, Blue Springs, Mo.; Carole (Don) Gordan, Vallejo, Calif.; Jean (Bill) Hanvey, American Fork; Lyndon (CrisTina) Christensen, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Adam (Annette) Christensen, Burley, Idaho; and numerous great-great nieces and nephews all who dearly loved their “Uncle Bud”. Preceded in death by niece, Shirley Hanks; and three sisters, Agnes Harris, Virginia King and Emma Scidmore.
Funeral services were Jan 3, at the Helper LDS Stake Center. Interment, Price City Cemetery.


Effie Etcheverry


SPRING CANYON/WASHINGTON TERRACE – Effie Dorothy Etcheverry, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 at McKay-Dee Hospital.
She was born Dec. 10. 1926 in Spring Canyon, a daughter of Antone and Christina Kochevar Evatz. On Jan. 26, 1957, Effie married John B. Etcheverry at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ogden.
She graduated from the School of Nursing at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City. She finished her nursing training at the University of Utah where she received her bachelors degree. She started her nursing career at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City in 1951. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Benedict’s Hospital for over 30 years. She was also a nursing instructor at Weber State University where she received the Utah Student Nurses Association Instructor of the Year award in 1992-1993. Effie held high standards for herself and her students. She had the utmost respect from the faculty and students. She was also involved in the Special Olympics and AVATAR with her daughter, Tina.
Effie was a wonderful wife and mother and spent many years with her husband, Johnny, helping care for the sheep on the range. She devoted her life to family and friends which brought her the most joy. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. She was involved in the St. Joseph’s Senior Citizen Club, Ogden Business and Professional Womens Club, and the Utah Nurses Association.
Surviving are son and daughter, John Etcheverry and Tina Etcheverry, both of Washington Terrace; two grandchildren, Trystan “TJ” Etcheverry and Ashlyn Etcheverry. Also surviving are brother and sister, Ed Evatz, Reno, Nev.; and Marge Evatz Jackson, Oak City. Effie was preceded in death by husband, John B. Etcheverry; one brother; and two sisters, Antone “Tony” Evatz, Mary “Mitzi” Starkovich; and Christina “Tina” Carlson.
Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 514 24th Street.

Victoria Turpin


PRICE- Victoria Martinez Turpin passed away sometime in 2002.
She was born Sept. 2, 1969 in Price, to Efren Martinez and Lynda Garcia.
She grew up in Salt Lake City and resided in Colorado. She was a loving mother, daughter and sister.
Survived by father, Efren Martinez; mother, Lynda Garcia; daughter, Amanda; son, Skyler; sisters, Effie, Saundra and Destini; six nephews and one niece.
Funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 6, 12 noon, Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to services. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.


Byron Olsen


PRICE – Byron C. Olsen, age 73, passed away Dec. 31, 2003 at his home in Price.
He was born June 8, 1930 in National to Ira Glen and Myrtle Clair Bishop Olsen. He married Carol B. Hunter Jan. 12, 1950 in Price, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
Byron was a 30-year member and past captain of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Posse. One of the hardest things he ever had to do was to get rid of his horse, Bruce. He always maintained a close working relationship with the sheriff’s department.
He was a longtime owner and operator of Eastern Utah Produce.
He loved the outdoors, where he spent many happy hours fishing, hunting and camping with his family and tinkering in his shop.
He was honored to be a past grand marshal of the Carbon County International Days Parade.
He was always a hard worker and respected by all who knew him.
Byron suffered from many illnesses through the years, but always maintained a great sense of humor and never complained.
Byron is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol of Price; children, Vickie Wells of Spring Glen; Kent and Evelyn Olsen of Carbonville; Scott and Pat Olsen of Price; Barbara and David Maynarich of Spring Glen; and Larry and Dalene Olsen of Price; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and two on the way. Also survived by brother, Reid “Bill” and Lois Olsen of Helper. Preceded in death by parents; two brothers; three sisters; and son-in-law, Craig Pilling.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 5 in the Price 4th/5th LDS Ward Chapel. Burial, Price City Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Monahan and staff and all those who assisted in Byron’s care.


Bill Ward


PRICE – William “Bill” Richard Ward, age 82, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 surrounded by his family at Castleview Hospital in Price.
He was born May 5, 1921 in Clear Creek to Joseph Hyram and Emma Bunce Ward. Married Helen Koss March 11, 1946 in Elko, Nev. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. She died Dec. 15, 2001.
Bill grew up in the town of Clear Creek and, once the war started, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. After the war, he married, moved to Price and worked at the Columbia coal mine, where he was also active in serving as the union president.
Once the mine closed down, he moved to Cory, Colo., where he worked as a federal mine inspector until he retired. With the loss of Helen, Bill moved back to Price and was well cared for by his family and the staff at the Heirloom Inn.
Bill was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He enjoyed his life and those around him. He always had a cheerful smile and a joke. He was always full of wonderful advice and had a willingness to help others.
He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
He is survived by son, Joe (Karen) Ward, Price; two daughters, Karen “Nikki” Young, Truckee, Calif; Sandra (Wesley) Morlang, Fruita, Colo.; brother, John (Evelyn) Ward, Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren, Bill, Lisa, Cory, John, Jodi, Stacie, and Danyll; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Helen; parents; sisters, Elvira, Louise, Thelma, Lola and Erma; and son-in-law, John H. Young.
Funeral service Wednesday, Jan. 7, noon, Price 8th LDS Ward, 995 East 700 North. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Price City Cemetery.


Mark Greenland


Mark Alfred Greenland, 38, of Kelso, Wash., died Jan. 2, 2004.
He was born June 7, 1965 in Salt Lake City.
Lived in Longview for 12 years coming from Ridgecrest, Calif. Graduated from high school in Ridgecrest, Calif. He worked at Longview Fibre for the last nine years as a papermaker. He enjoyed working with his hands and was a perfectionist. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. His greatest joy was his son, Nicholas. He had a warm personality. He drew people to find and was a strong character. Was a member of the AWPPW. He served in the Navy for four years stationed at Treasure Island.
Survived by son, Nicholas Greenland of Kelso, Wash.; sister, Mary Frances Reed, San Rafael, Calif.; parents, Francis and Mary Lee Greenland, Longview, Wash.; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and two nieces.
In lieu of service there will be a visitation for family and friends Thursday, Jan. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home in Price. Committal service Friday, Jan. 9, 11 a.m. at Price City Cemetery under the direction of Steele Chapel of Longview Memorial Park.
