East Carbon narrowly defeated Wendover in an extra-inning game on Sept. 19, winning 5-4.
Center fielder Shane Wood set up the win with his walk in the eighth inning. Catcher Jesse Stewart hit the game-winning RBI double to score Wood and end the game.
Pitcher Andy Farlaino lead the team defensively with 12 strikeouts, battling his way through a slow start and early Wendover hits.
Coach Lucas Ingram said the entire team played a solid game to get the win.
“[The team]played better than they’ve ever played before,” Ingram commented. “It was a tough game and I was real happy with the way they stayed with it and pulled it out.”
The second game of the double-header was also tight right down to the last inning.
East Carbon won after 9-4 after entering the fifth inning ahead by one, 5-4.
A Farlaino triple scored two runs and the rest of the team combined to score the remaining three.
According to Ingram, the team is currently second in region, having lost only to Dugway in their initial games of the season.
“If we can beat Tintic this weekend, we should make it into the state tourney,” Ingram concluded.
The Vikings will lose three seniors after this year: Wood, Farlaino, and Stewart.
A large portion of the roster is composed of underclassmen, leaving experienced players for next year’s team.
East Carbon travels to Tintic Sept. 26 for a double-header against the Miners.
State quarter finals begin Oct. 6.
