Eagle baseball club struggles in Nevada

The College of Eastern Utah baseball team continued season action this past weekend as the team traveled to Nevada. In a two day event, the Eagles faced the Southern Nevada Coyotes.
In the first game which took place last Friday afternoon, the Eagles sent Pat Wells to the pitchers mound. Wells played six innings allowing four hits and five runs.
The first run came in the bottom of the second inning as the Coyotes jumped ahead of the Eagles, 1-0.
The Eagles stepped up to bat in the third and had a difficult time making things click. The team was sent back out onto the field without a run under their belts.
The Coyotes continued to tally up points in the bottom of the third as they scored one more run. The Eagles now faced the pressure of launching a comeback.
At the end of six innings, the Eagles had failed to score a single run and the Coyotes claimed the Scenic West Atletic Conference victory by the final, 5-0.
The Eagles finished the first game of the day with three hits and no runs. With this in mind, the Eagles entered the second game determined to do better.
As the eastern Utah team stepped up to bat in the top of the first inning, the team accomplished what they set out to do. That was improve.
The Eagles scored one run in the first to take the 1-0 lead. The Coyotes answered CEU with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The scoring battle cooled off in the second inning as neither SWAC team scored a run.
In the bottom of the third however, the Nevada ball club managed to score three runs forcing the point gap to 5-1 in favor of the Coyotes as the two teams entered the fourth inning.
The Eagles found themselves losing momentum at this point. By the sixth inning, the team had tested three different pitchers out and the hits just weren’t coming.
The Eagles kicked off their second rally of the game in the top of this inning. The team did so by scoring two runs.
The Coyotes answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
As the Eagles entered the top of the seventh, they were faced with the difficult task of making up six runs in order to stay alive in the ball game.
CEU did score two runs in the inning before losing the ball game to the hosting Nevada team, 9-5.
The Eagles improved their batting figures in the second game by finishing with eight hits.
The following day, the Eagles stepped back out onto the field to face the Coyotes for the final two time last week.
The Eagles came out swinging in the first game of the day as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning.
Southern Nevada was unable to answer the Eagle’s scoring frenzy as the two teams entered the second inning with CEU leading the game, 3-0.
In this inning, the Eagles were able to score another run, but the Coyotes scored five of their own in the same inning.
In the final three innings of the game, the Coyotes opened up the door wide and took control of the scoreboard.
At the end of six innings, the Eagles had lost their third straight game to the Coyotes, 14-4.
The Eagles faced throwing problems in this game as the team tried out six different pitchers. But nothing seemed to work for the CEU team.
In the final of four games, the Eagles came out weathered, but not worn.
The game did play out much like the first three however. By the time that the Eagles stepped up to bat in the top of the second inning, they found themselves trailing southern Nevada, 6-0.
The only run of the game for the Eagles happened in the top of the third as Dustin Anderson ran in to home to score the run.
After seven innings, the Eagles had lost the final game, 7-1.
The disappointing weekend brought the Eagles season record to 7-16 overall and 1-7 against SWAC teams.
The Eagles hope to have a better weekend this week as the team travels to the Colorado Northwestern Community College where they will compete in four conference games.
CEU will return home next weekend as they host two days of action against Utah Valley State College.
