The only true state championship any high school in the state can win is in diving. All other sports use divisions and have numerous title holders. But there is only one in diving and Carbon High came away with second place last weekend with second place in the girls diving championships at Southern Utah University.
Each year the diving title meet is usually held at either the University of Utah or Brigham Young University. However, this year because of the Olympic activities along the Wasatch Front many of the venues for high school sports have been moved south and that included the diving meet.
Carbon’s Kimberly Snook, a senior, placed fourth overall at the meet. First place was taken by Jessica Schenk of Park City, second by Amanda Harrington of Judge Memorial and Britta Nilsson of East High.
Carbon’s other girl diver, Mikaleen Loveless, who is a freshman at Mont Harmon Junior High, placed 15th, and brought in enough points so that between her and Snook Carbon’s girls team was able to place second, tied with Judge Memorial.
The first place team was Park City. It was the third time in recent years that Carbon was able to finish second in the state.
Snook, who had beaten all three girls who placed in front of her two weeks ago, came up a little short this time, but still had a tremendous showing.
In the boys competition, Carbon’s only diver, Derek Potter qualified to get into the final round of diving where he placed 12th individually. Potter is a sophomore and is continually improving with each meet.
