It was a long road…
The Carbon High girls volleyball team has worked very hard over the last four years to gain the state 3A championship.
In 2000 they were knocked out of the championship track in the first round by Pineview High School and finished eighth.
In 2001 and 2002 they whipped through their regular season and then defeated everyone they played at state until they ran into the Morgan Lady Trojans who took the title in three games in each of those championship games.
It seemed 2003 might be their year, especially when Region 8 rival North Sanpete beat the reigning champions in the semi-finals of the state playoffs. But despite the fact that the Lady Dinos split their regular season games with North Sanpete during the season, and during the championship round was up two games to none, the Lady Hawks came back and won the 3A crown that year.
So this year the Lady Dinos came back with a tough attitude about winning, and win they did. During the regular season they didn’t lose a match all season, in fact they didn’t lose a game in a match either.
When they reached the state playoffs they easily dispatched Hurricane and Bear River on the same day. Then on Saturday they made it to the championship game by beating Pineview quite handily.
Carbon was in the lower bracket and was ready to play the champion of the upper bracket, which once again turned out to be Morgan.
At first it looked as if it would be a repeat of 2001 and 2003. Carbon was whipped soundly in the first game. But halfway through the second game they began a rally that never quit throughout the rest of the match until they finally took home the volleyball crown for the first time in the history of Carbon High.
