The Castlegate posse has been preparing for their second annual Shootout at Cedar Mountain for the past several months. The posse is ready to step into the past and have a blast. The events have been written, sponsors on board, and entertainment is scheduled. Shooters have been signing up and are out practicing their skills, most of whom know that Cowboy Murder’n Maude is going to try to trip them up with silly props and lots of laughing, so the shooters are getting ready for just about anything.
The cowboy action shooting event is always a little story that unfolds with a shooting sequence. The guns used are two single action pistols, and old time shotgun, and a carbine, just like Roy Rogers or Hoppalong Cassidy used.
And of course, there is even some singing from time to time. All this is done under the clock for a great sense of competition.
There are over 45,000 members world wide who participate in single action shooting, which is the fastest growing shooting sport in the world. The Castlegate Posse is one such club that enjoys participating in the popular event.
The posse invites anyone interested to come out and watch the action and enjoy the entertainment on Saturday, April 27. The entertainment for the day will begin at 10 a.m. with a talk by John Hagner of the Hollywood Stuntman’s Hall of Fame. Author Steve Lacy will also be at the event to sign his new book relating to the wild west.
By 2 p.m., Lacy will lead a tour to a spot in the Swell to view a signature on a rock written by the famous local outlaw Matt Warner. Then, the Nine Mile Players will tune up and play old time western cowboy songs around 4:30 p.m. Afterwards, the shooting trophies will be awarded and some poetry and readings will be offered.
The public is welcome to come out and see what all the noise is about. To reach the site, travel south on Highway 10 to Huntington, turn east on Center St. by the school and follow the signs 13 miles into the heart of the San Rafael Swell, the hideout of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch.
