The College of Eastern Utah’s Eagle Dancers and its cheer, yell and song squads placed fourth and fifth respectively at the United Spirit Association’s Collegiate Nationals held in Las Vegas at the Cashman Center last weekend.
Over 100 two and four year colleges competed in the two-day event in partner stunting, show cheer, coed-show cheer, mascot, all-star show cheer, all-star coed show cheer, dance/pom and all-star dance/pom.
Both CEU groups were named in the top five of their respective divisions after Sunday’s preliminary rounds and advanced to the finals on Monday. In their first appearance in the finals, the Eagle Dancers were named fourth place overall. Orange Coast College from Costa Mesa, Calif., placed first, Salt Lake Community College placed second, and Mt. San Antonio College from Walnut, Calif., placed third.
The cheer, yell and song squads also made their first appearance in the finals competition where they were named as the fifth place team. Placing ahead of CEU was Orange Coast Community College in first place, Salt Lake Community College in second place, Long Beach City College from Long Beach, Calif., in third place and Ventura College from Ventura, Calif., in fourth.
“The magnitude of what the CEU teams accomplished at this national tournament is best put into perspective when one looks at the enrollments of the colleges the CEU squads were up against,” said Susan Polster, CEU cheer coach. “Mt. San Antonio College has 39,000 students, Long Beach City College has 28,000 students, Orange Coast has 26,000 students, Salt Lake Community College has 21,000 students and Ventura College has 12,000 students. Compare this to CEU’s less than 3,000 students.”
