Utah State University Eastern Men’s soccer faced Otero Junior College in a non-conference match Saturday. The Eagles looked for redemption after being thrashed twice by nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College the previous weekend.
“We’re just trying to get back,” said sophomore defender Said Mohamed before the match.
The Eagles started slowly having trouble with the Rattlers high press. Defender Max Garrett inadvertently heading the ball into his own net while trying to clear an Otero cross. Another defensive error on a free-kick, allowed Bryson Chiles to make it 2-0 Rattlers at the half. USUE only able to muster one shot on goal in the first period.
It was a different story in the second half as the Eagles came out with much more intensity, resolving the Rattlers high-press. Jojea Kwizera cut in from the right wing to feed Frank DeBry whose shot beat the Rattlers keeper. The Eagles were level on 74 minutes, Frank DeBry’s corner headed in by defender Raul Apricio.
The match went into overtime tied at 2-2. Jojea Kwizera again setting up Frank DeBry with the match winning golden goal.
He controlled the ball in the penalty area and fed Debry at the back post, 3-2 Eagles. USUE finished the match with 10 shots, seven on goal. Frank DeBry has 9 goals on the season and is ranked top thirty nationwide for goals scored.
The Eagles improved their record to 5-3 with the win. They stand 1-3 in conference play. Next weekend they play conference champions Snow College at home. Kick offs are 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
