Carbon volleyball lost to the Delta Rabbits 3-1 on Tuesday at home.
Delta entered Tuesday night’s game undefeated in region play and looking to keep their one game lead over Juab and Union in the standings.
In the first set it definitely was looking like their first loss could happen at the hands of the Dinos.
Carbon came out in the first set a 8-3 start which eventually lead to the Dinos having a seven point lead later on.
“Our girls came out hitting so hard. That is one thing that they didn’t lose at all during the whole game. They didn’t tip and they kept hitting and hitting,” said Carbon assistant volleyball coach Maquette Smith.
The Dinos would roll to a 25-20 win in the first set, that win was the first set win over Delta since the Rabbits moved up to 3A last year.
Delta would respond in the second set and kept the lead over the Dinos throughout the set until Carbon tied it at 17-17.
Led by their setter Makenna Blanc and her athleticism on the court, the Dinos hung with the Rabbits in a marathon of a second set.
Carbon fought until the very end in the second set until the Rabbits pulled away with a 29-27 victory.
“Our girls are getting more and more scrappy. They are wanting it more and more every game. They are trying so hard to get every ball up,” said Smith.
Carbon’s Katie Jones said that everyone really did their job in the first two sets including junior varsity players that came off the bench.
“We had hitters putting down the ball when we needed them. We had different subs, even those that came down from JV that really stepped up and did their jobs,” said Jones.
After the lengthy battle which was the second set, Carbon and Delta would continue to exchange leads throughout the set until Delta went on a 10-4 run.
Jones said that right around the time Delta reached the 20 point mark in the third set was when the momentum and energy shifted in the game.
“There was more of a negative energy than a positive energy but we still hustled and did what we needed to do. The last five points of the third set really affected how we played in the fourth set,” said Jones.
The Dinos came out flat in the fourth set and looked like a completely different team than the first two sets of the match.
“The girls started to get tired and feeling less energy, slowly our hits started to stop falling,” said Smith.
Delta led the Dinos by as much as 16-4 in the fourth set, Carbon would not reach double digits in points until the very last minute of the game.
The Rabbits would go on and take the final set with a score of 25-10.
Carbon’s McKenna Leonard finished the night with a team-high eight kills.
Samantha Scoggins led the Dinos on the defensive end with seven blocks. She also chipped in with five kills.
Blanc finished the night with 24 assists for Carbon and did things for the Dinos that didn’t show up in the final stat sheet including the hustle plays and the dives to the floor to keep her team in the game.
After the game Smith said that her team is eager to get working to prepare for their next opponent, Providence Hall.
“They are all excited to get to practice tomorrow and start working hard because they want the wins,” said Smith.
Carbon travels to Herriman on Thursday to take on Providence Hall, a team that has yet to win a region game this season.
