Letter to the Editor, RE: Jail Bookings – Tom McCourt

Editor,
We have laws for the purpose of protecting the rights, property and well-being of our citizens. In the interests of public safety, citizens have a right to know who is arrested and charged for violating our laws, not just those who are convicted in court. Too bad if those arrested and charged are embarrassed for having their misdeeds known. Until just recently, exposure was considered a criminal deterrent.
Court proceedings often take years and bad actors are routinely released back to our streets while the judicial process plays out. We have a right to know who those people are, and a community newspaper has an obligation to let us know.
When crimes are committed, citizens are injured and our society is damaged or threatened; instead of providing cover for the lawbreakers, The Sun Advocate should print the news.
—Tom McCourt, Price
