Utah State University Eastern men’s soccer kicked off their home fixtures against Sheridan College, Friday of Labor Day weekend.
The Eagles dominated play from the start.
Frank DeBry heading just over from close range. Defender Said Mohamed shooting just past the post from the edge of the penalty area. Jojea Kwizera made  the breakthrough in the 36 minute. His pace taking him past the defender, his left footed shot from a tight angle beating the Generals’ goalkeeper. 1-0 at the half, the Eagles out shooting the Generals 9-1.
More of the same in the second half as the Eagles continued to pile on the pressure. DeBry tripped in the penalty area in the 55 minute. His penalty superbly tipped around the post by Sheridan keeper Tyler Ring.
From the resulting corner the Eagles scored again, Debry volleying in Guillermo Hernandez’s cross at the back post to put the Eagles up 2-0.
USUE continued to create lots of chances; forwards, Mat Clark, Spencer Anderson, Hernandez and DeBry all came close.
Sheridan created little in attack, a penalty appeal for handball was waived off by the officials.
Eagles goalkeeper Davila Aleman recorded only one save on the night.
“Easily the best we’ve played, still some defensive mistakes, best overall game,” said Associate Head Coach Jared Woodhouse.
On Saturday the Eagles lined up against Trinidad Junior College from Colorado. The Eagles continued to soar going up 2-0 in nine minutes. Leading scorer DeBry scored after just four minutes; Clark added a second five minutes later.
“Our team has so many players at different positions that can shoot the ball, so it makes it easier to get the lead early,” said striker Hernandez.
DeBry  scored again from close range, dispatching Clark’s pass into the bottom right corner. The Eagles were up 3-0 at half time.
Trinidad pushed more players forward in the second half and found some space down the right wing. Jonathan Ordaz heading in a Hakim Williams free kick to pull a goal back for the Trojans after 20 minutes.
But DeBry made it 4-1 shortly after, hitting the top right corner of the net with 11 minutes left. This was his first hat trick in college soccer. He assisted on the final score after the Eagles picked off an errant Trojans throw in. Clark beat the Trinidad keeper from close range.
The match ended in USUE’s advantage, 5-1.
“I thought the men played well both days, especially today against Trinidad in the first half. We are moving in the right direction,” said Head Coach Ammon Bennett.
The Eagles are 3-0 on the season and play the College Of Southern Nevada at home this weekend.
Kick offs are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
DeBry was named one of three USUE athletes of the week, after scoring four goals in two games. He has six goals on the season making him among the top five scorers in NJCAA college soccer.
“He is a very smart crafty player. He is dangerous when he gets the ball in close; he is very patient in front of the box and has the ability to find the back of the net which is fantastic,” Bennett said.
