American Fork native to be promoted to brigadier general

DRAPER, Utah—Having served in the military for more than 32 years, Col. Gregory J. Hadfield, originally from American Fork, Utah, will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general at the headquarters facility for the Utah National Guard on July 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Hadfield will assume the duties of the deputy director J2, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
Most recently he served as the director of the Chief’s Action Group, for the Chief of the National Guard Bureau in Virginia.
“Greg Hadfield is a man of outstanding character and recognized expert in the Army intelligence community. His selection for brigadier general and pending assignment to AFRICOM will have a lasting positive impact on the Utah National Guard, and the U.S. Army,” said the Adjutant General for the Utah National Guard, Maj. Gen. Jeff Burton.
After enlisting in 1986, Hadfield was commissioned in the reserve component of the Army at the Utah Military Academy in 1990 and has successfully held command and staff positions at every level. His time commanding the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist) with the Utah National Guard was one of his highlights.
“I have served with some of the best Soldiers in the world. I am honored to represent them… I could not have attained this rank without the hard work and dedication of the Soldiers that have served alongside me and leaders who have always maintained the highest standards and expected the best of me and our Army,” said Hadfield.
Hadfield’s other accomplishments include a deployment to Iraq in 2006 as a battalion commander, many important assignments with the chief of the National Guard in Virginia, and working at the Pentagon on Army intelligence staff. Before his time on active duty, Hadfield served as a traditional guardsman and civilian hospital administrator in Central and Southern Utah.
Hadfield’s highest awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. He holds several masters degrees, is an MIT and Syracuse University National Security Fellow and graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
“I am excited as I take on new responsibilities at AFRICOM and confident that my experience and expertise will support security operations and partnership building that will enhance the security of our great nation,” said Hadfield.
Col. Hadfield is married with four children.
