The Carbon baseball team lost to the Desert Hills Thunder 15-4 in a non-region game on Tuesday in Helper.
Before the game started the Dinos honored this year’s seniors who were playing in their final regular season home game.
Desert Hills, who are one of the top teams in 4A, started the game with a run scored in the top of the first.
A Nate Olson RBI single in the bottom of the first tied the game a 1-1 before heading into the next inning.
In the second inning Desert Hills bats came alive against Carbon’s starting pitcher Zac Bradley. The Thunder scored four runs in the inning off three hits with two walks allowed by the Dinos.
Desert Hills added six more runs in the third inning to really put the Dinos away early.
“We had ten walks today, that is terrible, I don’t care who is on the mound. Ten walks is way too many and we better clean that up a lot,”said Carbon Head Coach Jeff Cisneros.
Carbon’s offense never really got going because of the pitching of Desert Hills. The Dinos struck out 12 times at the plate on Tuesday and only had three hits.
“Way too many strikeouts, 12 strikeouts off of that pitching staff, not to take anything away from Desert Hills but we need to be better at the plate,” said Cisneros.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Carbon did add three runs to cut the Thunder lead to 11-4.
Carbon scored on an error, passed ball, and an RBI single by Anthony Jones.
After the fourth inning, the weather stepped in and there was a twenty-minute rain delay with the pitching mound and home plate covered by tarps.
When play resumed Desert Hills added two more runs in the top of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth the Thunder added an exclamation point on the win with a two-run home run to push the lead to 15-4.
The game ended in the sixth inning and it gave the Dinos their second home loss of the season.
“We were terrible today with our effort and just lazy. I understand we are coming off a big win Friday mentally too but we should show up better and give a better effort,” said Cisneros.
Carbon will host their first two 3A State Tournament games this upcoming Saturday at the Legion Field in Helper.
The Dinos will open the tournament this Saturday against rival Emery at 10 a.m.
The winner of that game will advance to play the winner of Grand County and Morgan at 5:30 p.m. later that day.
Carbon previously defeated Emery 16-0 at home in five innings on March 28.
