The Carbon Dinos lost to the Union Cougars 15-3 on Thursday at home.
Both teams came into the game near the top of the Region 14 standings but ultimately the Cougars walked away with their second victory of the season over Carbon.
“Their pitcher was better than our hitters today. We have some great hitters but today we just struggled to hit the way we do,” said Carbon Head Coach Wade Williams.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Dinos got on the board with a Kaytlyn Cripps solo home run.
Later that inning the Dinos would tie the game after a ground out by Clarissa Noyes brought Cali Fossat home from third.
Beyond the second inning the Dinos could not get back on the board until later in the game because of the pitching of Union’s Ally Rook.
Rook pitched a complete game with five strike outs and only allowed five hits and three runs.
“She pitched really good like we couldn’t hit anything off of her. We are a great hitting team but she pitched fantastic today, she did great,” said Carbon pitcher Dekota Kraushaar.
The game got out of hand quickly in the top of the fifth when Carbon allowed six runs to cross home plate.
“We made some uncharacteristic errors, we kind of got down and they just kept putting it on us and we didn’t respond like we normally do,” said Williams.
Carbon would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth after Lyndsey Madrigal touched home when Kelsey Sorenson grounded out to first.
Union’s offense would continue to put more runs on the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh inning.
They added three more runs in the sixth off a three-run home run from Madison Hadlock and four more runs in the seventh off a steal at home and another three-run home run.
The loss on Thursday moves the Dinos’ record to 17-4 overall and 6-2 in region play. It was also the first loss since March 27 for Carbon and their first home loss of the season.
There is still a chance for the Dinos to clinch the Region 14 title. If they defeat Delta and Juab next week along and end up in a three-way tie, there will be a coin flip to see who is the Region 14 winner.
Carbon will play at Delta on Tuesday and then host Juab on senior day on Thursday.
