Never had day after Thanksgiving as a holiday

We sent the following letter to our 3 County Commissioners who are looking for ways to balance their budget:
“We came down to the Courthouse on Nov. 24 to pay our property taxes – only to find the office “closed”. We worked for many years in Government offices and never had the day after Thanksgiving off as a holiday unless we took a day of leave. Somehow I doubt everyone employed by the County took a day of leave to cover the 24th. Makes me wonder what other ‘holidays’ are observed – perhaps everyone is off for the first Friday of deer hunt?
If you truly want to save some money this is an obvious ‘cut’ area – better for folks to lose the perk of a day off than for someone to be laid off completely because there is not enough money in the budget for them.”
