On October 18, Carbon School District celebrated the school grade successes. For the first time, one of the school district’s campuses received an A grade (Helper Middle School) while Castle Heights Elementary went up from a C to a B grade as determined by the state.
All other schools held onto the same rating they had last year. No school dropped grade.
The Carbon Board of Education directed school principals to come up with a plan to celebrate the occasion by awarding the schools a flat amount of $500, plus a dollar per student who attends the school, to participate in some fun activity on the Wednesday before fall break.
Schools celebrated in various ways.
Creekview
Creekview Elementary had a concert featuring Guy Sidel and his partner. The team did a song and comedy show for the students. The school gave all the students a wristband that says “Creekview Rocks.” After that event, students who sold at least three boxes of chocolates as a fund raiser for the school participated in a Silly String attack on Principal John Thomas.
Sally Mauro
At Sally Mauro the school used the money to have a choice of movies to go to in various classrooms. The theme was growing into being superheros, and the movies reflected the theme of heroes, implying that all the students were just that. Students could choose from “Robin Hood”, “Peter Pan”, “Incredibles”, “Big Hero 6”, “Lion King, Aladdin”, “The Lego Movie” and “Frozen”. The students got a treat and a water bottle during the movie and then afterward they got superhero pencils and a tag for their backpacks that said “I can reach my goals SME Success.”
Wellington
At Wellington Elementary the school held a “Minute to Win It” activity. Every student participated in a challenge and received a prize. There was lots of laughing, cheering, silliness and fun.
Castle Heights Elementary
Castle Heights Elementary students went to the King Koal Theaters and watched the move “The Stray”. When the movie ended there were a lot of teary-eyed students. Each student got a small drink and popcorn at the movie. The entire school went to the theater by using shifts in the three theaters there and buses running between the school and the complex.
Bruin Point
Bruin Point Elementary had a movie in the gym and then gave students a fleece throw, book and treat. The students then spread their blankets out on the gym floor and enjoyed the movie.
Helper Middle School
Helper Middle School held an assembly showing the students the data on how their school grew a grade each year of the last four, finally resulting in the A awarded by the state. There was a staff vs. students volleyball game. The students got treats and drinks during the event.
Mont Harmon
Mont Harmon Middle School had a number of events for students to attend. They got to play board games in the main foyer for one shift. For another, they went outside a participated in soccer and flag football. Everyone in the school also got to take a shift on riding a bus to Country Bowling Lanes and there they bowled, played pin ball and video games.
