The Carbon High School football team suffered a hard-fought loss against Ogden High School on Friday, falling 28-19.
The Dinos kept the battle close throughout the night, but only managed to put points on the board in the first half. In the first quarter, junior Noah Jones took the ball into the end zone on an eight-yard run, and junior Chance LeCheminant kicked the point-after-touchdown. The Dinos trailed 14-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The Dinos came within one point of tying the game in the second quarter, as senior Nate Olson ran the ball in for a touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the half. The extra point to tie the game was blocked by Ogden and Carbon trailed just 14-13.
Ogden quickly responded and scored a touchdown less than one minute later and extended its lead over the Dinos to eight points. But, with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Dinos weren’t done yet.
Olson scored his second touchdown of the quarter with under a minute remaining. Carbon attempted the two-point conversion but was unsuccessful, and the Dinos went into halftime trailing by just two points in a 21-19 game.
Carbon fell flat in the second half and was held scoreless throughout the two quarters of play. Despite a first-and-goal opportunity in the third quarter, the Dinos did not score, but they were also able to hold Ogden scoreless throughout the third quarter.
The score remained at 21-19 with the Dinos trailing by two points heading into the final period. Ogden scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to increase its lead to nine points. The Dinos fought their way down the field again and were again in a first-and-goal situation, but were unable to put any more points on the board and ultimately lost 28-19.
Olson led the Dinos offensively with 270 total yards, 240 rushing and 30 kick return. Jones totaled 58 rushing yards on 12 carries, and also completed five passes for 38 yards. Senior Johnny Scoggins caught two of the passes for 14 yards.
Defensively, senior Ashton Larsen, junior Collin Lewis and sophomore Jaylon Dennis each totaled six tackles, four solo and two assisted.
While the game will go in the books as a loss for Carbon, the Dinos are continuing to demonstrate strong performances to start the season. Carbon will hope to take this momentum, and lessons from the season’s losses thus far, into region play this week. Carbon will face-off against Union High School on Friday in another home game, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
