Rough, thick, native grass tried to keep Carbon golfers from their victory at the Ranches golf course in Eagle Mountain on Wednesday. Because the course has few trees, and is bordered by tall grasses along the fairways, golfers struggled with their long-game. Many golf balls went MIA leading to frustration, “The golf course was really shot specific. The players had to place their shots. If the ball went in the wrong spot it was difficult,” said coach Tom King.
Despite challenging terrain, Dinos came home with the lowest scores in the region and the top two individual golfers at the tourney. Carbon’s team scored a 325. Providence Hall followed with a 340. Union came in at 342, Delta at 368, ALA at 373, Juab at 379 and Maeser rounded out the day with a 460.
Medalist, Ryan Gagon, earned a 78 and top place in the tournament. “Ryan putted well. His short game was good,” said King. Ryker Smith followed one stroke behind with a 79 and second place. Sophomore, Brady Gagon came in at 83 and junior, Carson Martines, was at 85. Other Carbon players showed the following scores: Nick Olsen, 88; Zade Carrilo, 89; Tyler Yaklovich, 86 and Kaden Slavensky, 95.
Players will be putting hard to be ready for their only tournament at home this season on Sept. 7. After they host the region, state competitions are just around the corner. “We are really focusing on getting ready for state which is Oct. 4-5,” said King.
