The Utah Labor Commissions Office of Coal Mine Safety has recognized three coal mines in the state for their excellent safety records in 2016.
Kent Houghton, director of the office in Price, announced that the following operations received Safe Operator of the Year awards in their respective categories for having no reportable accidents last year that resulted in any employees missing work time:
Dugout Canyon Mine, Carbon County – Large Underground Mine
Dugout Canyon Mine, Castle Valley Preparation Plant, Carbon County – Coal Processing
Burton #1 Mine, Kane County – Small Underground Coal Mine
Coal Hollow Mine, Kane County – Surface Coal Mine
“The safety records of no lost-time accidents in 2016 is a great achievement in the coal industry and reflects on each company’s fine safety programs and training,” said Houghton. “The men and women who work at these mines have shown a commitment to a culture of safety.”
Dugout Canyon is owned by Bowie Resources. Burton #1 and Coal Hollow are operated by Alton Coal Development.
Created in 2008, the Office of Coal Mine Safety works closely with the coal mine industry; technical experts; educational institutions, and federal, state, and local government agencies to foster and maintain a safe and productive mining industry in Utah.
The Utah Labor Commission is a state agency that works to achieve safety for employers and employees in the state’s workplaces and ensure fairness in employment and housing through services that include consultation, education, inspections, compliance and mediation.
