Each year, Castle Country Radio, operating stations KOAL 107.3 FM/750 AM, KARB Kickin’ Country 98.3 FM and KRPX The Peak 95.3 FM from its long-time headquarters in Carbonville, holds a charity pie auction. Actual pies and other prizes are donated from businesses, local individuals and even local governments and then auctioned off live on the air to the highest bidder. The money raised by the pie auction varies annually, however, due to the ongoing generosity of Castle Country is typically thousands of dollars. The money raised is used to fund $100 fuel cards that are provided free to those in the area needing to travel for cancer treatments. Additionally, monetary gifts are made from the pie auction funds to other local charitable entities to assist related cancer treatment programs as well as annual contributions to the Thomas B. Anderson scholarship program for a local student who has had or currently has cancer. This year over 60 pies were donated for the auction and $12,392 was raised.
Funds generated annually from the pie auction are deposited with the Southeast Utah Community Development Corporation (CDC), a 501c3 charity for community and economic improvement. Not only does the CDC facilitate charitable donations for the donors but is able to act as the fiscal agent for the pie auction.
This year the pie auction is providing a grant in the amount of $5,000 to the Perkie Travel Program. Perkie travel is named after “Aunt Perkie”, Perena Marizo and her need to travel from the local area for cancer treatments. Perkie Travel is operated from Active Re-Entry and travel is provided daily from the Price area to cancer treatment centers along the Wasatch Front.
