Team leads region by 78 strokes
The Dinos dominated their first two region golf tournaments at Delta’s Sunset View Golf Course yesterday and Fox Hollow Golf Course in American Fork last Tuesday.
The Dinos came in with a team score of 313 yesterday, a winning lead of 36 strokes. Combined with their Fox Hollow scores, the team has a 78 stroke lead.
Sunset View Tournament
Brothers Ryan and Brady Gagon swept first and second places at the tournament. “Both Gagons played really well. Ryan shot two over par earning a 74. He played solid all day. Brady played steady and eagled his second to last hole to highlight his round of 76. I’m very proud of them,” said King.
Sophmore, Brady Gagon, is coming on strong. King added, “Brady is going to be a future leader on this golf team. He could be a state champion and a regional medalist throughout his career if he keeps this up.”
The Delta tournament offered a target golf course which is more difficult than Carbon’s course. Facing the challenge, the team golfed well. Ryker Smith shot a 78, Carson Martines and Zade Carrillo matched scores of 85.
King is seeing improvements early in the season, that he’s pleased with, “I’m really proud of how the young ones did at this tournament. Jordan Penovich who shot a 87 played extremely well, Tyler Yaklovich and Nick Olsen are making huge improvements and I’m proud of them,” he added.
Fox Hollow Tournament
At Fox Hollow, the team ended the tournament with a low total of 314 points. The second place team, Providence Hall, trailed with a gap of 32 points at a 346.
Ryker Smith lead the team by shooting a 71, which is 1 under par. Ryan Gagon came in at a 76 with Carson Martinez earning a 81. Brady Gagon, a sophomore, looked good at 86.
Though the team won the tournament, Coach Tom King is pushing for more. “I told the kids that 310- 315 would win it, but I wanted them lower. We were very close, but honestly it wasn’t good enough for me. Our goal is to make the 300s. If we want to meet our goal of winning state this year, we need to be there.”
Dino team golfers earned low scores: Zade Carrillo, 87, Tyler Yoklavich, 88, Nick Olson, 93 and Jordan Penovich, 102.
The next challenge for the Dinos is Tuesday, where they look to improve on their lead in Region 14 at the Roosevelt Golf Course against the Union Cougars.
