The Carbon County Assessor’s Office is conducting a detailed review of property appraisals for a section of the county known as the “Water District.”
County Assessor Julie Medley said the district under evaluation this year includes 2,585 properties in the unincorporated areas of Spring Glen, Carbonville, Westwood, Coal Creek and Miller Creek.
Property owners in these area may have already received a questionnaire in the mail for the details of the property. While the information is voluntary, it helps the assessor’s office be more accurate in their valuation of property.
Utah Code mandates that cyclical appraisals be done on every property in the county every five years. Assessor’s office personnel are identified by county logos on their car, clothing and identification.
The values that are being gathered will be used to determine the market and taxable value for the 2018 tax year. For 2017, values have already been determined, and property owners will be receiving a disclosure notice of the 2017 tax assessment in the mail in the near future from the county auditor’s office.
Property owners may appeal the valuation of their property through the Board of Equalization. Appeals should be filed with the Carbon County Clerk no later than Sept. 15.
An in-person Board of Equalization hearing will take place Aug. 28-30. Payment of 2017 taxes is due Nov. 30.
