What do you get when you combine 50 pounds of butter and 50 packages of phyllo dough? Two thousand slices of heaven (also known as in the baklava). The baking is almost finished for one of Carbon County’s tastiest events, the annual Greek Festival Days.
On Saturday, about 75 volunteers gathered in the basement of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price to layer phyllo dough, butter, sugar, walnuts and cloves to create this rich and popular desert. Volunteers have been working hard over many weeks to prepare thousands of cookies and pastries. “Monday we bake bread and then we are done with all of the deserts,” Connie Hamilton said.
The festival is slated to welcome guests this Friday and Saturday. Along with baklava, members of the Greek church will be serving popular savory Greek foods such as gyros, slouvlaki, rice pilaf and calamari.
Greek dancers and the Chris Dokos band will be in town to entertain crowds. The festival offers games, drawings, church tours and a gift shop. There will be a 5 K run Saturday morning at 8 am for those who want to work off all of the pastries they eat.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the festival will run until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
