LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Time to rethink priorities

At first, I was going to curse the different entities that were responsible for actions regarding Bookmobile and Senior Friday lunches, but I love this city and each of you. I know that’s not how it is done in Price City. To fight each other would cause animosity and would not accomplish a thing.
I usually do not have to make a stand because our citizens are put on the front of most decisions for the betterment of majority. I personally feel the decision to close such a wonderful avenue as the Bookmobile was not well thought through. Our surrounding cities rely on the Bookmobile for their only source of reading materials. Many do not have the Internet, local libraries, nor are the schools available in the summer. More people rely on this service than you can possibly fathom. Is our children’s reading not important? As a mother I am taking a stand on what I believe to be right in my heart. Are we going to get rid of our Senior Friday lunches too?
My efforts throughout life have been primarily focused on children and our elderly. Our City is a great city because of the people we have entrusted (elected) to take care of us and do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. My dear senior friend that I admired with all my heart once said to me, “If decisions are made for one entity or one person or one purpose, and not the whole of our city, rethink until you come up with something that is good for the majority.”
I do not come to the media without credentials. I have a Master’s Degree in Psychology, licensed by the State of Utah as a School Counselor with a Level II Teaching Certificate. I have been PTA President and also Child Advocate for this district. I have worked at the State Capitol with the Legislature where I functioned in hand with Governor Mike Leavitt at the root of the great program “No Child Left Behind.”
After I was blessed with Brain Cancer, I made an oath within myself that the rights of the child will go first; especially those with the slightest disability who may be abused or mistreated or bullied and kicked around or kicked out by a few that fail to see or fail to negotiate the rights of our children. Removing the basic access to reading is wrong, and that is what I think is happening. It affects me as a grandmother observing my grandkids reading, and mother than need help with children that are inbound.
I realize that Price City has an extraordinary Library and extremely happy that our Mayor and city officials realize “it takes a whole community to raise our children.”
In as much as I will always fight for the rights of our children and our seniors, I know all our Community leaders are inherently good. Our community is rich with seniors and it is so hard on them now. A lot of them use Friday’s lunch so they have food over the weekend. So let us- RETHINK.
