Every Forest in the National Forest System is required to have a land management plan in accordance with the National Forest Management Act of 1976. Known as Forest Plans, these documents provide strategic guidance for how Forest lands are to be managed to allow for multiple uses while maintaining healthy ecosystems. The Forest Plan sets overarching guidance for implementing site specific projects on the ground.
Established in 1986, the current Manti-La Sal National Forest Plan is 30 years old and needs to be revised to address the changing needs of the Forest and those who use it. This revision is expected to last multiple years, starting with the Assessment Phase in 2016 and ending with approval of the new Forest Plan, expected in 2020.
