My name is Bob Wall. I first met Dr. Alfonso Trujillo in 1954 during my freshmen year at Carbon Junior College. His chemistry classes were some of the best classes I ever experienced in college or graduate school. Dr. Trujillo, who died recently, was one of the finest human beings I have ever known.
He was friendly, funny, and highly competent. I was impressed with his knowledge of chemistry and his outstanding teaching methods. He gave me confidence that I could succeed in graduating with a degree in chemistry. I did not believe that I could do it until I took his chemistry classes.
Until I read his very interesting Obituary in the Sun Advocate, which summarized the many accomplishments of Dr. Trujillo, I had no idea that he was a true war hero. I am a World War II history buff and my wife (former Shirlene Gardner) and I toured the area in Normandy France, where on June 6, 1944, Alfonso Trujillo parachuted at night into the town of St. Marie-Eglise, France along with many other US Army soldiers as part of the D-Day Invasion. Dr. Trujillo never mentioned his many military accomplishments in any of his college courses that I took. He was truly a humble man. I believe his lifetime accomplishments will never be exceeded by any of his college students or by other teachers at the College of Eastern Utah or its successors. He will be surely missed by all those that knew him.
