The Carbon High School softball team concluded its season at the 3A State Tournament last week, falling to Stansbury High School on Friday after defeating Desert Hills High School on Thursday.
The Dinos went into the tournament at Spanish Fork Softball Complex 1-1, after losing to Cedar High School, but defeating Logan High School in the first two rounds of the tournament in Cedar City on May 13.
The long ball led the Dinos to their 3-2 win over Desert Hills, with Kaytlyn Cripps hitting a solo home run in the first inning and Kinley Nelson hitting a solo homer in the third inning.
Desert Hills managed one run in the fourth inning, to bring the score to 2-1 but an RBI sacrifice by Cripps in the fifth gave the Dinos another two-run lead.
Desert Hills scored one more run on a passed ball in the sixth inning, but the Dinos were able to hold on to the lead for the win and move on to the next round of the tournament.
Nelson earned the complete game win, tossing seven innings, allowing two runs, neither earned, while striking out six and walking three.
Carbon was eliminated from the tournament by Stansbury High School, a tough match-up in which the Stallions ended up moving on with the 7-4 victory.
Stansbury did not waste any time putting runs on the scoreboard, totaling three in the first inning. The Stallions scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth, without answer from the Dinos.
Carbon scored its four runs in the seventh inning, a last attempt to make-up the seven run deficit. With two outs, Mckenna Pendergrass scored on an error by the shortstop. Cripps follwed with an RBI single, and Nelson hit a two-RBI single for the Dinos’ four runs. However, a pop out for the final out of the game ended the Dinos’ run and Stansbury moved on to the next round.
The Dinos conclude their season with a record of 14-10 overall and 3-5 in Region 12 play.
