The Carbon High School baseball team was officially eliminated from the 3A State Tournament after a hard-fought battle into the fourth round this weekend.
Carbon faced Stansbury High School in the third round of the tournament at Nelson Field in Spanish Fork, and advanced to the next round after a nail-biting 4-3 win.
The Dinos got on the scoreboard quickly against the Stallions, scoring two runs in the first inning. After senior Gavin Robinett reached on an error by an infielder, junior Cody Lowe hit an RBI triple. Senior Chase Morgan followed with an RBI single to score Lowe.
The Dinos held the lead for a few innings, before Stansbury scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double.
The game did not stay tied for long, as the Dinos took a one-run lead in the fourth inning. Senior Kameron Gunter hit a lead-off triple, and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Zac Bradley. The Dinos extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning, with senior Wyatt Wilson hitting an RBI single to score junior Nate Olson, who had reached on a walk.
Despite the Stallions scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dinos were able to hold on for the win and move on in the tournament.
Bradley started the game on the mound for the Dinos, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two. Sophomore Adrian Sanchez entered the game in relief and threw 2.2 innings, with one earned run and four strikeouts. Lowe went 2-for-4 at the plate, with a triple and an RBI. Gunter also went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Carbon was eliminated in the next round of the tournament, falling to Juan Diego High School 14-5. A five-run first inning by the Soaring Eagles put the Dinos behind quickly, and while the Dinos were able to make up that initial deficit throughout the game, the Soaring Eagles continued to tack on to their lead.
Carbon’s first two runs came in the second inning, on an RBI triple by Gunter and an RBI sacrifice fly by Olson. The Dinos brought the score within one run with two in the third inning before Juan Diego scored three runs in the top of the fourth to increase the lead once again. A run in the fifth and five in the seventh by Juan Diego sealed the game for the Soaring Eagles, despite the Dinos scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh. The loss eliminated Carbon from the State Tournament.
The Dinos had split the first two games of the tournament on May 13, falling to Desert Hills High School before defeating Morgan High School to advance to the next round of the tournament.
Carbon concludes the 2017 season with an overall record of 14-12 and a Region 12 record of 7-5.
