Price decides cemetery rules ‘a living document’

plea from members of a Price family, the Price City Council voted to change the specifications for headstones in one row of section P in the “Old” City Cemetery. The action came after an informal hearing at the regular city council meeting of May 10.
The Price City Cemetery Map shows part of Section P as a flat headstone section, so designated for ease of maintenance. But the family purchased a plot in the section under the mistaken impression that an upright headstone would be allowed.
That left the family with the option to accept a flat headstone or disinter and move their family member. Neither option was acceptable. They petitioned the city council for a variance in the rule after a request was denied by city staff acting according to policy.
It was noted in the meeting that there are no more plots available in the cemetery, although plots that have been purchased may be sold privately. Parks and Cemetery Supervisor Brianna Welch said, “Right now we do not have any space at Price City Cemetery, in the old cemetery. They are either occupied or owned by somebody else.” Plots are only available at Cliffview Cemetery.
Mayor Joe Piccolo said, “The cemetery policy is being overhauled completely. We’re adding a new section to Cliffview Cemetery and cleaning up and doing some housekeeping on Price City Cemetery as well.”
Some members of the council said they persuaded by the passionate request from the family. Council Member Rick Davis remarked, “I’m a policy and procedure type person. If it’s written, it’s law. But it’s a living document too. It can be changed.” The council voted to amend the city policy to allow upright headstones for the row that includes the family’s plot in section P at the Price City Cemetery.
