Carbon Softball splits first games of State, advances to 3rd round

The Carbon High School softball team lost its first game of the 3A State Tournament, but won its second, to move on to the third round.
On Saturday, the Dinos faced Cedar City High School in their first game, the number one seed from Region 9. The Dinos lost 7-1, after allowing the Redmen of Cedar City to take an early lead. The Redmen scored one run in the first inning, and three in the second to jump out on top. The Dinos scored their only run of the game in the fourth inning, on a solo home run by Kinley Nelson. However, a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for Cedar City sent the Redmen to the next round of the tournament with a win.
The Dinos faced the Grizzlies of Logan High School in their second game on Saturday and returned home victorious, with a 10-1 win.
Logan scored its only run of the game in the first inning, and held the lead until the Dinos scored three runs in the third inning. Kelsey Sorenson tied the game at one run with a solo homer to lead off the inning, and Cali Fossat followed with a two-run home run to take the lead.
The Dinos tacked on another run on an RBI sacrifice fly by K. Sorenson in the fourth inning. Three more runs in the fifth, induced by errors on Logan’s part, extended the Dinos’ lead to seven runs. Carbon finished off the Grizzlies with two runs in the seventh inning.
The Dinos advance to the third round of the 3A State Tournament, which will be played on Thursday at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex. Carbon will play at 3:15 p.m., against the loser of the earlier game between Desert Hills and Grantsville high schools.
