Jewell Barkley

PRICE—Jewell E. Barkley passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Thursday, May 4, 2017, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
I was fortunate to be born on June 17, 1935 in Butte, Montana, to my wonderful parents Elsie Carkeek Arnason and John B. Arnason. My mom’s parents were from Cornwall, England, and my dad’s from Iceland. Both families were large—nothing new for the time. I spent all my time with aunts, uncles, and my parents. One of my fondest memories is of the time my mom and dad and I camped near a river and panned for gold.
The Great Depression was supposedly over, but my folks still felt the hardships. We would live with relatives for a couple of months, and have our own apartment a few months later. My first school was a one-room school and I had one classmate. My younger brother Jackie Arnason was born, and a few months later my family moved to the mountains above Helena, Montana, where we lived in a log cabin and enjoyed the wildlife each evening as the sun went down.
My dad was hired at US Fuel in Hiawatha, Utah, where my youngest sister, Evelyn, was born. My parents spent the next 20+ years in Hiawatha. I graduated from Carbon High School in 1953 and started a new life by moving to California. I was employed shortly after arriving there, and a year later married my first husband, Don Rogers. We had four children: Donald (Robin) Rogers, Lynda (Roy) Barnett, Dennis Rogers, Julie (Gary) Green. My husband died in 1965.
I married Gerald I. Barkley in 1966, bringing John (Michelle) Barkley to the family. Later our youngest son Gary (Brooke) Barkley was born. A few weeks ago, I celebrated 51 wonderful years with my husband.
Through my life I have been fortunate to know many extended relations, and to be blessed with dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by son John Barkley.
