County to host Cal Ripken Tournament
Carbon County will play host to over 1,200 little league baseball players this summer, as it was chosen as the site for the 2017 Southern Utah Cal Ripken State Tournament.
Fields in Price, Helper and possibly even Wellington will be utilized as 70 teams, six local, with players ages 8 through 12 will compete in the annual tournament, hoping to qualify for regionals.
The location of the tournament is chosen at random, with each area having to raise $5,000 before putting their name in the running. The money is used for baseballs, traveling expenses for commissioners and the World Series. Carbon has put-in the last four years and was finally chosen to host the 2017 tournament at the end of last year.
State Tournament Director Jill Emerson would like to remind the community that this is a great opportunity to showcase the Carbon area, and encourage those visiting to come back in the future. Volunteers are always needed to help run the week-long event smoothly, and more information will be available on how the community can help in the coming weeks.
The tournament will be held June 26 through July 1, beginning with pool play. All of the games will be free to attend, and there will be concessions and vendor booths at the fields.
