Carbon Baseball wins series against Richfield

By Sierra Trujillo

The Carbon High School baseball team earned another series win on the season, defeating Richfield High School for a second time on Friday.
The Dinos made quick work of the Wildcats from Richfield, scoring 10 runs in six innings. Seniors Gavin Robinett and Chase Morgan combined to throw a shut out for the Dinos, with Robinett starting the game and throwing five scoreless innings, striking out five and walking three.
“Another good outing for [Robinett],” said head coach Jeff Cisneros. “He got out of the first inning without giving up a run. Seems like it just takes him a little while to get going but good for him. Seems like everyone seems to be healthy with their arms, so we’re in good shape.”
Morgan entered in the sixth and final inning and struck out one batter in his one inning of work.
“Chase has really been doing a nice job,” said Cisneros. “He’s kind of filling in that guy that we need to come in and finish a game for us and just throw strikes and that’s what we need.”
The Dinos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, with runs scoring on an RBI groundout by sophomore Collin Lewis and on wild pitches and errors.
Carbon tacked on four more runs in the third inning, breaking the game open. The Dinos scored on more mistakes by the Wildcats: errors, wild pitches and passed balls. The Dinos ended the game with one out in the sixth inning, with junior Cody Lowe, who reached on a triple, scoring on an RBI groundout by senior Jayden Flemett and Morgan, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scoroing on a pinch-hit RBI double by senior Josh Barlow.
Despite the 10 runs, the Dinos did not hit the ball well, tallying just four hits, with most runs being scored on the Wildcats’ mistakes.
“We didn’t hit the ball well, but we didn’t get a lot of pitches to hit… but we came and took care of business so that’s a good thing,” said Cisneros.
The Dinos are now 8-7 overall this season and 4-2 in Region 12 play, after defeating Richfield twice and losing once last week. Carbon will play at home against North Sanpete High School on Tuesday in a doubleheader, with the first game set for 3 p.m.
“[North] Sanpete’s a team that I expect to win all three games, which you can’t just expect that, [you have to] play the game and have it happen, so we’ve got to stay focused,” said Cisneros.
