Carbon High School
Carbon High School’s Vocal Jazz choir sang well enough in recent national competition to earn an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City next spring.
The group won first place gold at a national choir festival in San Diego. Their high score gives them the opportunity to sing where famous people like Duke Ellington, Tchaikovsky, and the Beatles have performed.
All four of the school’s audition choirs made the trip. Concert Choir took Silver in their category, Musettes took Silver and Men’s Choir took Bronze.
Instructor Arthella Williams said, “It was such a neat experience to see how hard each member in Vocal Jazz worked and to see their reaction when they were told they took first place, and they have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. I know that each member of Vocal Jazz is very involved at CHS, and I appreciate all the extra time they put into preparing for our region and tour festivals. I’m really proud of their work!”
In March, all four audition choirs from Carbon — more than 155 students in all – participated and competed in regional competitions. They all received Superior and Excellent ratings (Superior is the highest rating, Excellent is the second highest rating). CHS has quite a few individuals who qualified with their vocal solos, piano solos, and vocal ensembles to compete at State on April 29.
