Local golfer to travel to Australia

By Sun Advocate

A lot of people dream about taking a vacation to Australia, but not many do it. However for Carson Martines, that dream of not only going Down Under, but being able to play his favorite game will become a reality this summer.
Martines will be part of the 2017 Utah Mountain Conference Golf Team that will be representing this part of the west at the Down Under Sports Golf Tournament that will be held in July in Queensland, Australia. During his time there he will actually play in a two-part tournament with the All-American Tournament and then the next day the International Tournament.
Down Under Sports has been holding a golf tournament for 14 years, adding to its long list of sports it sponsors as international fares including wrestling, Amercing football, cross country, track and field, basketball, volleyball and of course golf.
The whole idea came from the mind of George O’Scanlon, a New Zealander, who loved American football and thought that sports often will bridge the gap between continents and give the participants the chance to meet and compete with others from around the world.
The cost of the tournament and traveling to it is paid for by the participant, who must not only use their own resources but must also fund raise to pay for the trip.
Martines is the son of Tony and Heather Martines, who are both accompanying him on the venture. He is on the golf team at Carbon High School.
“One of my dreams is to travel to Australia, and now it’s becoming a reality,” said Martines.
