A sixth inning surge pushed the Carbon High School softball team past Union High School on Friday, with the Dinos earning the 12-9 victory.
A back and forth battle from the start, the game reached a tie after five innings, before Union went up by a run in the top of the sixth. However, sending 12 players to the plate in the inning, the Dinos scored six runs on four hits and took the lead.
After Markale Gressmen and Kelsey Sorenson each reached base on errors to start the sixth inning, Kaytlyn Cripps hit an RBI double to score Gressmen. Kinley Nelson was hit by a pitch, before Mckenna Sorenson hit an RBI single to score K. Sorenson, with Cripps scoring on the throw. Cali Fossat hit a two-RBI single and Mckenna Pendergrass hit an RBI single before the inning was over also.
Union began to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs, but Carbon was able to hold off the effort.
Union got out to an early lead to start the game, scoring three runs in the second inning, but Carbon earned one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Gressmen. After Union scored two runs in the top of the third, Carbon tied the game at five in the bottom of the inning, with the help of RBI singles by Fossat and Gressmen. Carbon scored a run in the fourth to take the lead on an RBI single by Nelson, but Union tied the game in the fifth.
Fossat led the Dinos with three hits and three RBI in the game. Gressmen finished by going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
The Dinos will play host to South Sevier High School on Friday for their next game, with first pitched scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
