The Carbon High School girls’ basketball team faced a tough battle against Desert Hills High School in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Tournament, but ultimately came out victorious. With the win, the Lady Dinos are headed to the semifinals, to face Juan Diego Catholic, the number one seed from Region 11.
The Dinos may have faced their toughest opponent in Desert Hills, but came away with a surprising 59-44 win, thanks in large part to junior Kelsey Sorenson’s 17-point performance, including three three-pointers.
The Dinos held a small lead after the first quarter, 11-10, but began to pull away in the second quarter, with 24 points, compared to the Thunder’s 13. Despite being outscored by two points in the third quarter, the Dinos held on in the fourth to claim the win and send Carbon to the semifinals for the third year in a row.
The Dinos will play today, Friday, at 4:10 p.m. against Juan Diego Catholic in the semifinals. Juan Diego defeated Union High School 44-34 yesterday to reach the next round of the tournament.
