The Carbon High School girls’ basketball team won its first game of the 3A State Tournament, defeating the Stallions of Stansbury High School on Saturday 53-41.
Carbon trailed Stansbury after the first quarter 10-8, managing just two points from the field and six from the free throw line. However, the Dinos tied the game at 13 points and again at 16 in the second quarter before beginning to pull away at the end of the quarter. The Dinos went into halftime leading 31-21.
Carbon hit a rough patch in the third quarter, only scoring two points, but was able to hold Stansbury to four. With 20 points in the fourth quarter, compared to the Stallions’ 16, the Dinos were able to earn the win.
The Dinos were led by freshman Jordan Bianco offensively, who scored 16 points in the game, including 11 in the second quarter with three three-pointers. Senior Lindsey Blanc and junior Kelsey Sorenson tallied eight points each.
The Dinos advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament to face-off against Desert Hills High School on Thursday at Utah State University, Logan. Desert Hills entered the tournament as the top seed in Region 9, with an overall record of 19-3 and a region record of 9-1.
The Dinos earned their 18th win of the season against the Stallions. Last season, the Dinos advanced to the semifinals of the 3A State Tournament before falling to Cedar City High School. The Lady Dinos finished third in the tournament, defeating Pine View High School.
