A winter storm brought much needed precipitation but also created hazardous driving conditions over the New Year’s holiday weekend. No serious injuries were reported but there were numerous weather-related incidents. Multiple slide offs were reported near the Carbon Country Club just after 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
Cpl. Matt Bunnell of the Utah Highway Patrol said there were three separate crashes in the area, all involving westbound traffic. He said it appeared the drivers lost control at the curve in the highway at the junction with Carbonville Road. The spate of crashes began with a westbound tractor-trailer rig that slid across the eastbound lanes of SR-6 and ended up in the Price River. The driver was uninjured. The next incident involved a small pickup truck that rolled, sending a female passenger to the hospital with a head injury. A Nissan Maxima then slid off the icy pavement and down a ravine. Four people were transported to the hospital but refused treatment. The UHP closed one traffic lane for several hours during the investigation and clean up. Bunnell said it took six or seven hours to get the big rig out of the river channel.
Bunnell said all of the people involved were buckled up and that likely prevented more serious injuries.
The UDOT issued a road weather alert for continued snowfall across Central Utah through Monday night and into Tuesday, and an emergency alert was in effect for all vehicles traveling on US-191 over Indian Canyon Summit, and SR-6 over Soldier Summit requiring chains or four-wheel drive due to snow-packed road conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of northern and central Utah with a chance of snow in the forecast through the week, including the possibility of significant mountain snow.
