Dan Taylor is graduating from Carbon High after 30 years.
Well, retiring is the official term.
During his tenure he has taught geology, biology, astronomy, Earth Systems, Pre-Engineering, and a Special Science Projects/Labs class. He developed after-school and weekend clubs and activities including GAAP (Geology, Astronomy, Archeology and Paleontology) and SILC (Science Interactive Learning Center). Through support and grants written by Carbon School District, it was possible for him to put together several region wide competition events such as rocket launches, siege machines, mouse trap cars and many others (often with help and support from CEU). He has accompanied many students to Regional and National Science Fairs and Science Symposiums.
Science field trips have also been a major part of Taylor’s program. There have been several hands-on opportunities every year for interested students, such as night labs, hikes through Goblin Valley, Little Wild Horse, Topaz Mountain, Black Rock Desert, geode-beds (over-night camping), and a 5 day canoe trip in the summer, creating field logs and developing labs. He takes students to SLC several times every year for U of U Science Day, the planetarium, aquariums, museums and The Leonardo exhibits.
“I have enjoyed working with students, parents, fellow educators and administrators. Mostly I have loved teaching, and will miss it. I’ve met some extraordinary students! I enjoy seeing them develop, as they journey on in life,” he said.
A scrapbook is being prepared for his graduation surprise gift, and everyone is invited to write a quick note of thanks to add to this project.
