The Utah Department of Transportation is planning to upgrade a section of State Highway 10 South of Price over the next two years. Much of the existing roadway through the area has two lanes and a narrow shoulder. The project is still in the design phase, but preliminary plans call for widening the road to a 79-foot right-of-way. That would accommodate two travel lanes, a center turn lane, curb and gutter and a sidewalk. The plans also include 6-8 foot shoulders and improved drainage.
The design was presented during the May 4 regular meeting of the Carbon County Commission. The UDOT is currently preparing an environmental document and designing the improvements. Field survey crews are on site collecting data to assist the design team. Crew members will be working in the shoulder of the road and will be wearing high-visibility vests.
Project Manager Troy Torgersen stated, “The purpose of the project is to improve safety.” That will include improved sight distance near Robertson Road. He noted the original scope of the highway project was from US-6 to Ridge Road, but due to budget constraints the plan has been revised for a somewhat shorter project, running from Fairgrounds Road to 3000 South.
Torgersen said, “We are working on right-of-way as we speak. We’re gonna have some meetings in June of 2016 for right-of-way issues. We have a public meeting that will be scheduled for June of 2016 for the residents along this section of roadway.” He said the meeting dates have not been set but residents of the area will be notified by mail.
The design phase will continue through early 2017 with construction anticipated to begin in the summer of 2017. Completion of the project is expected in the fall of 2018. Funding for the $11 million project includes $7.5 million from the State of Utah and $3.5 million in federal transportation funds. About $300,000 has been spent so far on preliminary engineering.
