Helper chooses site for coal miners monument

By John Serfustini

The Helper City Council has decided on a general location for the Miners Memorial satellite monument, but the specifics in feet and inches will have to wait. The site will be in the mining machinery outdoor exhibit just west of the Railroad and Mining Museum on 100 West and Poplar Streets.
The monument will list the names of all the coal mines in the area and the count of how many miners died in them. Unlike the main memorial in the Price Peace Gardens, this one will not list the names of individual victims.

Best location

Council members decided against putting the monument in the Senior Citizens Park on Main Street because there is already a collection of plaques there. The advantages of the equipment exhibit site are that it is already mine-related and close to the museum, making it convenient for tourism.
The site also makes it possible for future improvements, noted council member David Dornan. It may be feasible to put in a display showing the direction and description of each of the mines listed, he said.
