The Pinnacle Canyon Academy high school boys’ basketball team cruised to a 76-54 win over Monument Valley on Saturday, after jumping out to a huge lead to start the game.
The Panthers started the game with a 16-0 run and continued to light up the scoreboard, going into halftime with a 44-18 lead. Even with the starters resting most of the final period, the Panthers were able to secure the win.
Senior Noah Mascarenas led the Panthers with 18 points, going 6-15 from the field and 4-8 from the free throw line. Senior Levi Rutherford was right behind with 17 points of his own, going 6-12 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. Mascarenas also tallied five steals. Senior Brnadon Otto and junior Valentin Acosta led the team in rebounds, both tallying six in the game.
The Panthers, now 12-5 overall and 5-2 in Region 19 play, have three games left on the season, with the final two being played at home on Feb. 19 and 25. The Panthers remain in sole possession of second place in the Region 19 standings behind Monticello, who served Pinnacle its only two region losses this season. The top two teams in the Region will go on to play in the 1A State tournament.
