The Pinnacle Canyon Academy high school boys’ basketball team completed the season sweep of rival Green River, with a win over the Pirates on Tuesday on the road.
The Panthers defeated the Pirates 64-40 for their fourth Region 19 win of the season. With this win, the Panthers remain in sole possession of second place in the Region 19 standings. The top two teams at the end of the regular season receive a bid to the state tournament. Pinnacle made it to a State play-in game last year, but has never won a game in the actual State tournament, which is the team’s ultimate goal this season.
The Panthers led throughout the entire game against Green River, scoring the most points in the fourth period with 22.
Senior Levi Rutherford led the way with 16 points, with junior Jonathan Giddings close behind with 12. Senior Noah Mascarenas led the team with six steals in the game, while junior Val Acosta led with nine rebounds.
Pinnacle will play just two more games at home this season, Feb. 19 against Telos at 6 p.m., a non-region matchup and Feb. 25 against Whitehorse at 7 p.m., which will include the Senior Night ceremony.
