Sally Maryboy

By Sun Advocate

WELLINGTON- Sally Louise Maryboy, known fondly by her students as “Mrs. Maryboy”, passed away December 25, 2015 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. One of her former students commented, “seems fitting she passed on Jesus’ birthday as she was truly a gift placed on this earth with a purpose not only to teach but to touch souls along the way.”
Sally was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 5, 1936 to Sarah E. Gannon and Albert F. Frese. At a very young age, Sally showed an affinity to teach and lead others.
Sally obtained her teaching degree and started her career in 1958 writing and directing children’s plays in New York. In 1960, she traveled to South Dakota to teach at the St. Mary’s School for Indian Girls. In 1963, she traveled to Bluff, Utah, as an Episcopal Missionary and taught Head Start to non-English speaking children at St. Christopher’s Mission. She met and married the man of her dreams, Richard Maryboy in 1964, during a time of unrest in our nation. This did not stop them from having a lifetime of love that spanned over 51 years. Sally was very proud of her husband’s Navajo culture and way of life–she lived it and learned enough of the Navajo language to communicate with the families of the children she taught. She became an advocate for the Navajo people, and spoke on their behalf dressed in her traditional Navajo outfit.
In 1969, she moved to Price, Utah with her family. She taught at Durrant Elementary School for 3 years before finding the path that would define her career. For the next 28 years, from 1971 to 1999, Mrs. Maryboy taught at Notre Dame Catholic School. She was able to positively influence and shape the lives of the children she taught with songs, patience and love. At the age of 46, she obtained her Master of Education Degree from BYU. Education was her passion–she preached and instilled that not only in the children she taught, but her friends and family as well. Mrs. Maryboy had an incredible teaching career that spanned over 46 years. She was straight forward, honest, a “true New Yorker” at heart. Teaching was more than a job, it was a way of life.
Sally’s foundation was her family, it’s what grounded her. Her strength, joy and love of life came from her family and her faith in God. Her grandchildren brought a whole new dimension to her life and she relished her time with them. Even as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed, Richard continued to care for and keep his wife at home. He and her grandson Justin took her on outings to the store, church, outdoor concerts and a daily ride in their van. A true testament to his devotion and their love.
Sally is survived by her husband, Richard Maryboy; daughter, Sally Ann Rich (Davey); stepson’s, Leo & Hyrum Maryboy; sister, Irene Pelton; grandson’s, Jesse, Justin & Jarrad Maryboy and Zane Albert & Seth David Rich. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert & Sarah Frese.
Her family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Symbii Home Health & Hospice staff, especially Rick Stockburger.
