At a recent Carbon School District Board meeting, members were discussing early out Mondays, when schools release students early so teachers can use that rest of the day for planning and for meetings concerning Professional Learning Community activities.
For a student’s point of view, the board asked Dalton Latimer what he thought. He replied that he had studied the subject by personal interviews and social media and found that 75 percent of students preferred that the early out day be on Friday. “I think people like to go out of town on weekends and that is a way for them to get an early start on that,” he said.
Latimer, a Carbon High School senior and Sterling Scholar in Social Sciences, is this year’s student representative on the board. While not a voting member, he can give the students’ point of view, something many school boards lack.
He is involved with both in and out of school activities. He is the president of student senate, a student body officer in student government, involved in the school musicals and a member of the track and cross country teams. He also says he “enjoys boating, running, sleeping, and eating cheesecake…” but probably not in that order.
Latimer represents a tradition in Carbon District of having students be a part of the decision-making process. He will serve until the end of June 2016.
